Dressing your baby – simply and softly

A newborn’s greatest needs are the love and care of their parents, but their physical comfort is just as essential for their overall well-being. That’s why we’ve put together this guide on what materials and fabrics to choose, which cuts and styles work best, and how much clothing you really need.

Why thoughtful clothing choices matter

Every baby is unique – some feel the cold more than others – but one thing is certain: newborns cannot regulate their body temperature on their own yet.

After birth, a baby’s body temperature depends on the surrounding environment. If the external temperature is thermoneutral (where heat production and loss are balanced), their body temperature remains stable at 36.6–37.3°C. They don’t sweat from overheating or fuss from being too cold.

Since newborn skin is extremely delicate, it’s best to dress babies in layers to help regulate their warmth. A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby in one more layer than you’re wearing yourself. To check if they’re at a comfortable temperature, feel their nape or forehead – it should be warm but not sweaty. If it’s hot or damp, remove a layer; if it’s cool, add one.

How to choose the right baby clothes?

1. Prioritize quality over quantity

Babies grow fast, so their wardrobe will need frequent updates. Instead of overbuying, focus on fewer, higher-quality items that last longer.

For newborns, softness is key – their skin is delicate, so natural fabrics or eco-tex certified materials are the best choices.

2. Go for comfortable & practical designs

Newborns spend most of their time lying down, which means comfort should come first. From experience, we recommend wrap-style bodysuits that open from the front, making it easy to dress your baby without pulling clothes over their head.

Pair bodysuits with soft, wide-waistband pants that don’t press against the belly. Look for ribbed cuffs at the ankles – this helps keep pants in place and extends their wear time as your baby grows.

Regardless of the style, the most important thing is that the fabrics are soft and skin-friendly. Babies often wear the same outfit all day (unless there’s a little accident!), meaning their clothes constantly touch their skin. That’s why we call our carefully selected fabrics “skin-friendly fabrics.”

Why investing in quality saves you money

You may have heard the saying:
“I’m not rich enough to buy cheap things.”

We’ve both heard it and learned it the hard way—sometimes, the “cheaper” option ends up costing more.

1. The cost of choosing cheap alternatives

If you settle for a lower-quality product, it may not meet your needs, have hidden flaws, or wear out quickly. If you later go back to buying the quality option you wanted in the first place, you’ve now paid for both the cheap alternative and the better one.

This applies to technology, clothing, and everything in between. When it comes to quality, comfort, and your baby’s well-being, cutting corners isn’t worth it.

2. Ethical production matters

Low prices are often achieved through low production costs, which can mean using poor-quality materials or unethical manufacturing practices.

We can’t name names, but recent conversations around fair wages and ethical labor practices highlight why this matters.

Many low-quality products look good on the surface, but we don’t always know the full story – where the materials came from, the working conditions they were made in, or their long-term impact on our health and environment.

At Safal KIDS, all our fabrics are ethically produced and skin-friendly. This means: no allergens or skin irritation; eco-friendly materials; transparent, traceable production.

3. Durable clothes hold their value

High-quality clothing is easier to resell or pass down. A well-made item withstands multiple washes, retains its shape and color, and doesn’t develop pilling or loose seams.

Encouraging independence – a small success for a big step!

Yes, you read that right – success. Little ones need daily moments of achievement to grow their confidence. One simple way to boost their independence is by choosing clothes they can put on themselves.

The secret? Simple, fuss-free designs without unnecessary zippers, buttons, or decorations that can be tricky for tiny hands. If a child can dress themselves easily, it’s a win for both them and you!

That’s exactly what we focus on at Safal KIDSsoft, simple, skin-friendly clothing that we confidently recommend because we test them on our own children first.
