A baby’s skin is extremely sensitive and delicate, so it is important to choose clothes that are made from natural materials and have an ecotex certificate. This way, you can be sure that these materials will not irritate the skin, pose a risk of overheating or cause allergic reactions.

When it comes to clothing babies, layering is key. As the weather can change throughout the day, it’s important to choose clothes that allow you to easily regulate your baby’s temperature. The first layer could be a thin and breathable bodysuit or baby wrap to keep baby’s skin dry. Cotton and merino wool or silk bodysuits are ideal as they allow the skin to breathe and absorb moisture well.

The second layer could be a little thicker – for example, a thin jacket or sweater (or a cotton/merino overall), depending on the weather. This layer should also be made of a soft, natural material that does not irritate the skin or hinder the baby’s movement. By using several layers, the clothing can be easily adjusted during the day according to the temperatures.

Dressing babies needs special attention. The right layers and natural materials help to keep the baby’s skin protected and maintain a comfortable temperature, avoiding both overheating and chilling.

When dressing babies, be sure to avoid synthetic fabrics and clothes with large printed pictures, as they do not allow the skin to breathe, can cause skin irritations and make babies restless.

Cuts and design

In the first months of life (and indeed later), comfort is a priority. Wrap bodysuits or onesies are great options as they are easy to put on and don’t require excessive buttoning or fastening. Care should also be taken to ensure that the seams of the garments are soft and do not rub the baby’s skin. As the baby grows, you should also keep an eye on these same truths – that the seams are soft and move with the fabric. That way, you can be sure that as your baby grows and starts to move around more, he or she will feel comfortable both when playing and when sleeping. After all, these are both of your baby’s main tasks.

Baby and toddler clothes should not only be functional, but also safe and comfortable. We recommend avoiding any printed pictures, satins, sequins, etc. that your child might get tangled up in when getting dressed. By choosing natural materials and tested designs, you can ensure your baby’s well-being and comfort at every stage of life.

So what exactly do you look for when choosing clothes?

  • Natural materials and ecotex certification: These materials are skin-friendly and do not cause allergic reactions. The best choices are cotton, bamboo, linen, merino wool and silk.
  • Layered clothing. The first layer should always be breathable and thin, such as a babybody. The second layer could be a thinner jacket or sweater. This can be easily removed when temperatures become warmer, for example in the living room or car.
  • Correctly sized clothes: Avoid clothes that are too tight, which can rub the skin. Baby clothes should be roomy enough for baby to move freely.
  • Safety: choose clothing that has no small parts that could come loose and cause a choking hazard. Also avoid strong seams and large decorations that could irritate baby’s skin.
  • Easy care: baby clothes need to withstand frequent washing. Be sure to choose the right cycle (if not dirty, wash at 30! A 30-degree wash is just fine) and avoid tumble dryers if possible.

Protect your baby from the cold – advice from midwife

Keeping an eye on the temperature inside the pram is important.
In colder weather, it’s important to keep an eye on the temperature inside the pram to keep your baby warm and comfortable. If the temperature is below -10 degrees Celsius, be sure to check the temperature of the pram. Newer baby monitors are good for this, but if you need to, it can also help to check the bottom of the head: if the nect is warm, the baby is comfortable.

The right clothing for a baby sleeping in a pram
Baby’s arms and legs need extra warmth – woollen socks and gloves can help keep the baby comfortably warm. A baby who is not yet walking does not necessarily need boots. Keep in mind that boots should not be too narrow to keep feet warm and blood flow free.

Fresh air and a safe walk outdoors
If it is below -15 degrees Celsius outdoors, you may want to consider keeping your newborn indoors. There are, of course, cultures (Nordic countries) that recommend going outdoors at any temperature below freezing, but you should also consider your own feelings and comfort. Also note that the wind can raise the frost line. If you don’t want to go outdoors, the need for fresh air can be met at home by ventilating the room sensibly. For a start, you could experiment with dressing yourself and the baby warmly and just keeping the window open to enjoy the fresh air.
